Inert noble gas with potent anaesthetic properties. The inhaled concentration required for GA is 60–70%. The lungs must be denitrogenated by breathing 100% O2 for 15–20 min prior to anaesthesia.


  1. No negative inotropic effects.

  2. Does not trigger MH.

  3. Environmentally safe.

  4. Non-toxic.

  5. Not teratogenic.

  6. Rapid induction and recovery.

  7. Profoundly analgesic.


  1. Very expensive.

  2. Weak agent with a MAC of 63.

  3. Can cause diffusion hypoxia—use 100% O2 at end of case.
