AB The  A-a  gradient  is  the  difference  between  the  partial  pressure  of  oxygen  in  the  alveolus  (PAO2)  and  the  partial  pressure  of  oxygen  in  the  arterial  blood  (PaO2).  PAO2  is  the  ‘ideal’  alveolar  PO2.  The  A-a  gradient  is  helpful  in  diagnosing  the  cause  of  hypoxia.  See  Hypoxia/hypoxaemia.
